If you are like most of our clients, you have both Windows and iOS devices in your environment. Apple and PC, working together in the same space. Fortunately, times are changing, and these mixed environments can work well together.
New free mac games. In this case, a client who has a large number of Macs deployed in its environment asked recently what it means when Microsoft says current versions of Safari are 'supported.' After searching the Microsoft site and the internet in general, it became clear that there's very little data as to what 'supported' means.
I decided to run tests of common 'end-user' actions using a Mac and Safari to try to nail down what differences and limitations my client might expect using SharePoint Online versus what they might expect using Internet Explorer 11 on a PC.
There are a variety of variables that can potentially impact a user's experience with browser software. These variables include:
- Browser version
- Browser add-ins
- Browser configuration
- Operating System version
- Network and firewall connections
- Supporting software (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.)
- File extension configuration
- Device (Desktop, tablet, mobile, etc.)
- SharePoint customizations
Microsoft's documentation of browser support is located at: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263526.aspx. Unfortunately, details on exactly how Safari will work is non-existent.
Because SharePoint was originally coded as Internet Explorer-specific, some functionality requires the use of ActiveX browser add-ins. Because these add-ins are not supported by Safari, users will find that this functionality is either missing, displayed but not active, or the control can be clicked, but nothing happens or an error dialog is returned.
Microsoft appears to be in the process of removing these features (ala 'New Experience' document libraries) from the application in order to provide a more consistent user experience across all browsers.
Our Test Configuration for Safari and SharePoint
Here is the Mac/Safari configuration we tested:
Computer: MacBook Pro, OS X(El Capitan), OS Version 10.11.6
Office Version: Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, Version 14.6.2
Safari Version: 9.1.2 (11601.7.7)

The Results
I tested the following SharePoint actions using Safari on our MacBook Pro. Where is imovie located on my mac. Other IOS devices (IPhone, IPad) should not be expected to provide equivalent performance. I tried to cover what typical end-users might be doing in SharePoint Online–namely, browsing pages, and editing files and lists.
- Browse Web Pages
- Same experience as a PC user. Font and page presentation may be slightly different than PC users browsing with Internet Explorer or Chrome.
- Upload a file to a document library
- Same experience as a PC user.
- Update Metadata for the Document
- Calendar Icon – When clicking date/time fields that fall below the page fold in the edit form (user scrolled down the page to reach the field), the page display may return to the top of the form.
- Workaround: Scroll back down the page. The Calendar date picker should be available.
- Multi-line text fields: Rich Text editing controls are not available.
- Workaround: Enable enhanced rich text editing for the column.
- Drag and drop a file to a document library
- Depending on the trackpad version, you may need to adjust accessibility settings to enable drag and drop.
- Create a new document using Office Web Apps
- Same experience as PC users with exceptions noted in creating and editing list items.
- Open a document library in page view and use 'New Experience' Ribbon
- New Experience: same experience as PC Users.
- Open a List in page view and use List Ribbon
- Open with Project – Button is active but returns a dialog stating no compatible application is available or does nothing.

- OneDrive Sync Feature: Clicking the Sync link in the library ribbon returns a dialog asking for a MS compatible application or if OneDrive is installed on the computer.
- Workaround: Download OneDrive for Mac (OS X) I did not actually install the OneDrive client, so I can't confirm this will work the same as on a PC.
- Microsoft Visio Files: A Mac version of Visio does not exist.
- Workaround: Utilize 3rd-party software.
- Add a SharePoint Web Site to the Applications folder – highlight the site URL, then drag the URL to the Applications Folder.
- Mouse-over preview of search results does not work.
- Calendar Icon – When clicking date/time fields that fall below the page fold in the edit form (user scrolled down the page to reach the field), the page display may return to the top of the form.
- Open with Project – Button is active but returns a dialog stating no compatible application is available or does nothing.

In short – today, you can provide your Safari community with most of the same rich experience they'd have in Internet Explorer, and the feature set is continuing to evolve to work on most mainstream browsers. There's no doubt Microsoft Sharepoint is the absolute leader of the collaboration market: it has more than 200 million users, about 20,000 users join each day, and 80% of Fortune 500 companies use it.
However, the tremendously growing competition has broken down some niches where the generic approach of an all-in-one market doesn't fit customers looking for specific features.
Also, the company has made some decisions that have disgusted users—turning their attention to other providers. The Sharepoint community was highly disappointed when the company announced the retirement of Microsoft Access online to use PowerApps instead that, according to users, doesn't suffice. We can add the fact that Microsoft was actually a late adopter of mobile and cloud which dramatically damaged the perception of the brand being seen as a legacy company.
The world of software is rife with loose use of terms. A mere search for the phrase 'Sharepoint Alternative' will return tons of results which list applications without the slightest connection with Sharepoint.
Definitely NOT an alternative for Microsoft Sharepoint
Slack
We have nothing against Slack. Its success speaks for itself. However, to call it a Sharepoint Alternative is stretching it. Stewart Butterfield, Slack's co-founder, was asked what Slack was in a keynote in Boston in 2017. After thinking and laughing for some seconds, his answer was 'well, we call it a communication platform for the workplace.'
That's exactly right. And Sharepoint is not a communication platform. Slack offers persistent chat rooms, screen sharing and conferencing. Sharepoint offers document libraries, intranet portals and workflows. As you can see, no connection. Reason to strike Slack off your research list.
Trello
Trello is another product everyone loves. It's one of the world-leading project management tools for teams. It is used for IT teams to track bugs, coordinate leads between the marketing and sales departments, product roadmaps, individual to-do lists, and even funeral planning (and you thought you have seen everything).
Sharepoint might have project management features, but no team uses Sharepoint primarily for projects. If you want a nimble and modern project or work management solution, Sharepoint is definitely not for you. Both Monday and Asana fall into the same category as Trello.
WordPress
Get this, even WordPress is sometimes seen as a Sharepoint Alternative! If you are considering an alternative to Sharepoint, you are probably not looking to build a public website. Sharepoint does offer some limited capabilities to create public websites, but its strength lies in building intranet portals which mash information with tools workers need to accomplish their goals.
WordPress on the other hand, is the content management system which powers about 30% of worldwide websites. It is the rockstar of the CMS market. It started as a platform to build your blog, then your website, but its versatility has let developers build forums, e-commerce, and even web apps. With a specific set up, you can use it to create your own Intranet.
But, definitely not a Sharepoint Alternative.
So, what does a REAL Microsoft Sharepoint alternative look like?
Sharepoint is incredibly deep and sophisticated. Sometimes, dazzlingly so. Which is probably why people want to replace it. The cornerstones of Sharepoint are:
- Document libraries and sharing
- Intranet sites and team portals
- Workflows
- Web parts, or mini applications for specific purposes like tasks, calendars etc.

Since 2004, HyperOffice has focused on offering a complete collaborative suite. Among other features, HyperOffice includes:

Sharepoint For Mac App
Os mac 2011. Box has gained momentum in the document sharing and collaborative arena. Although Box is primarily focused on the document management piece for Sharepoint, it qualifies as a worthy alternative because most companies use Sharepoint primarily for this feature. Moreover, Box's DM capabilities have a lot of depth, making it suitable for enterprises.
Gsuite
Google has been a worthy foe, challenging Microsoft in many of its core areas with its web-first approach – browsers, search, email you name it. GSuite is Google's product in the collaboration market and brings a similar 'integrated collaboration environment' approach to Sharepoint. Though email is the centerpiece of GSuite it also includes the following capabilities.
- Document storage and collaboration with Google Drive
- Workflows (kind of) with Google Forms and Sheets
- Team sites with Google sites
- Collaboration apps like shared calendars and contacts.
Confluence
Microsoft Sharepoint For Mac
Atlassian has been worldwide recognized as a reference of agile and launching products as Bitbucket or Jira, used by thousands of developers. Confluence is part of their roadmap to build an entire collaborative space for developers.
While Confluence doesn't use words like 'intranets' or 'workflows', making some users ignore it as a Microsoft Sharepoint alternative, it happens to be a great place with the features needed to consider it.
If we want to identify a personality for each app, we would clearly consider Microsoft as a cold giant company, perfect for corporate environments, regardless of the dependency or department. Meanwhile, Confluence is made, designed and thought for web development teams.
